Yosemite's grand vistas populate the dreams of every landscape photographer, from the aspiring iPhone-toting instagrammers to the world-renowned professionals. In one of the most photographed areas on earth, it's difficult to create fresh original content. And yet that's the goal we set out to achieve during a recent trip to the national park.

We arrived at the famous "tunnel view" vista before dawn and waited for the perfect moment. We waited and waited but nothing particularly special happened, until a sudden serendipitous lull in visitor traffic to the parking lot left it empty, save for a lone RV camper. I threw a long telephoto lens on my camera, ran down the road to get the proper angle, and yelled at my assistant to stand up on the rock ledge. We only had a few reverent seconds before the crowds of people returned, but it was a special few moments where we were alone with the valley.

“It was like lying in a great solemn cathedral, far vaster and more beautiful than any built by the hand of man.” - Teddy Roosevelt
